National Museum of Scotland

Home > Attractions > National Museum of Scotland

The modern landmark building that houses our Scottish collections is in the middle of Edinburgh's historic Old Town, just minutes from the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. Hours can fly by here as you explore Scotland and the world! Some exhibits are millions of years old, others less than a decade.

You can take part in lots of activities every day at the Museum. Pick up a Museum Map when you arrive. It tells you what's on, where and when. Or check our plasma screens for the same information

For generations they have collected key exhibits from all over Scotland and beyond: Viking brooches, Pictish stones, ancient chessmen, medieval oak carvings and ornate quaichs; from Queen Mary's clarsach to Sir Jackie Stewart's F1 car.

The unusual, the weird and the wonderful - all under one roof. From the origins of Scottish history to the present day, the earliest cultures to space age science.

Younger visits can try out our Discovery Zones: Roman soldier or Viking trader - who will you be today? Or you can connect with Dolly the sheep, design a robot, test drive a Formula One car, power up a generator or blast off into outer space.

What will you discover?
